Using Newsletters to Gain and Retain Customers

By Melissa Shea

roadsignsAre you communicating with your clients and contacts? If you’re not, you’re losing money. It’s that simple. The easist way to grow your bottom line is to sell more of your services to your current and past clients.

Think about this:

1. Who already knows you? Past Clients

2. Who trusts you to deliver a good product? Past Clients

3. Who is already singing your praises? Past Clients

So, who would be the easiest prospect to sell more of your products or services? Past Clients! The best way to contact your past clients and introduce them to your new or expanded services is by starting a regulare-newsletter. You already have their email address, you already know all about their business, and you already know what they need. So – tell them what you can offer to help them be successful in the coming year.

The Cycle of Communication

By Melissa Shea

puzzle piecesI’ve spent a lot of time talking with small business owners about the importance of setting up a blog, using social media, and sending newsletters to their mailing list. The most common response is a physical response – the shoulders droop, a sigh escapes from their lips, their eyes close in exhaustion. I can see immediately that the mere thought of trying to add those elements to their routine is simply over-whelming.

So I immediately launch into my “mothering” mode, comforting them and telling them it’s alright, we all feel that way – but YOU CAN DO IT! Then once I have their spirits lifted and their attention… I give them a rundown on my Communication Cycle Strategy. And once they understand that – hey – this can be automated – they are on board with the idea of creating a communication strategy for their business.

So what is my Communication Cycle Strategy?

Writing TO Your Customers – Not AT Them

By Melissa Shea

iStock_000005917270XSmallI came across this article today and just had to share it with you. Copywriting for your web site can be one of your most difficults tasks for the non-gifted writer. BUT – without good copywriting your message will not be communicated to your visitors and you risk losing opporotunties each time a visitor comes to your site and clicks away.

That’s why, when I read this article I just had to share it with you – it’s something you really must pay attention to on your web site.

My Top 5 SEO Strategies

By Melissa Shea

If you’re not a trained professional, it can be hard to keep up with the latest in SEO trends and how to actually optimize your web site for search engines. Below are my Top 5 SEO Strategies that I use to get my clients improved rankings for their web sites.

  1. Register for a Google Adwords account and use their keyword tool to figure out what your best keyword phrases are for your services. You can start by looking at your top ranking competition and see what words they are using, then try to optimize your content using those keywords – and possibly some others that will get your site traffic for some niche audiences.
  2. Once you’ve determined the best keywords for each service, create a page on your web site for each service and use the top three best keyword phrases throughout the content.
  3. Optimize your home page using your top keyword phrase the best describes your overall business. You can implement the others as you explain your services, but you want your home page to generate traffic for your overall business mission.
  4. Make sure that you add the keywords for each page into your meta tag title, description and keywords. Do not stuff your keyword meta tags with words that are not on your page – that can actually hurt you with search engines. You only need the word once, separated by a comma.
  5. Make sure that your headings for the top of the page contain your main keywords and put them in an H1 tag, and put your keyword optimized sub headings in an h2 tag.

You can also learn a lot about search engine optimization through reading articles on various helpful web sites such as;

Web Site Traffic – What to do before they come…

By Melissa Shea

Finding ways to drive traffic to your web site should be one of the top priorities of any marketing strategy.  We all want more traffic so that we can introduce more people to our services, but before you invest time and money in driving people to your web site, you want to make sure that once a visitor is coming to your web site, they are doing what you want them to do – which is to get them on your mailing list. Whether it’s through a freebie or a purchase, building your mailing list is the ultimate goal of any good marketing strategy.

Before you start any traffic-building campaigns first analyze what you want the visitor to do and implement a path for the visitor to take. Read the rest of this entry »

Get Incoming Links to Your Web Site

By Melissa Shea

High value incoming links to your web site is an invaluable resource for two reasons:

1. Incoming links bring you traffic! And who doesn’t want that? Your web site needs to be exposed to the millions of web surfers out there everyday just looking for your amazing services! The surefire way to bring those masses to your web site 24/7 is to find high traffic web sites where you can place a link to your web site.

2. Search engines give ranking priority to web sites with a lot of high value incoming links. Just think of it like high school – the popular kids always got the most attention – right? So the popular kids must have the coolest clothes, the greatest hair, the lastest fashions…blah, blah, blah. Well, the search engines think just like your 15 year-old friends – if lots of web sites are linking to yours, then that must be an AWESOME web site! And while you won’t win Prom Queen, you will be rewarded with higher search engine rankings which equals MORE TRAFFIC!

Here are some Link Building Tips to get you started: Read the rest of this entry »

Do-it-Yourself Web Design

By Melissa Shea

Recently a client asked me if she should build her web site using a popular web hosting company’s template system. On the surface it sounds like a great idea – they provide a reasonable fee for hosting, many nice, simple designs to choose from and bells and whistles such as blogs and photo albums.

It sounds like a great solution for a new business that needs to save some dough and get a presence on the web. But here is the reality of using a web hosting template verses setting up your own template system.

First of all, if you’re using a web hosting template service, you really don’t “own” your web site. Your web site is dependent upon the hosting company’s content management system – which is the only way you can access your web site and modify the content without knowing html.

Secondly, if you decide you want to change web hosting companies because they have bad customer service – you can’t take your web site with you – it is dependent upon that company’s content management system – so you’re not going to be able to download the files and move them over to a new company. You can probably download the content – but not the template – which includes your design and layout.

And finally – these template systems sound easy to use. The web hosting company is telling you that in their advertising. But – I’ve had three new clients come to me in the last several months telling me they first tried to build the site themselves using the web hosting template system and found it too confusing and gave up. I am professional web developer and I agree – they are confusing and I don’t even like using them!

So how can you get a web site that has a great design, is cheap to start up AND is YOURS TO KEEP???? Read the rest of this entry »
