Taking Your Business to Task!
By Melissa Shea
Marketing your business to the masses has never been easier – that is if you can navigate all the information, products, services, and quite simply “the noise” that is out there about how to use internet marketing for your business.
Learning how to use internet marketing is a tall order. I’m not going to lie – it takes research, reading, executing, and testing. The list of what to do and how to do it can be so over-whelming that the average, busy business-owner can simply throw up their hands and say “forget it!”.
That frustration and the shear volume of information is really the reason Jen and I created Coffeeshopreneur. We wanted to provide a place where business owners could go to find out everything they need to know. Now, we’ve just started – so we’re not even close to meeting that goal yet – but we’re on our way to providing you incredible access to the greatest minds in the internet marketing business and products and services that you can trust.
So to help you wrap your brain around the basics of what you need to know I’m going to give you a list tasks that you can start working on that will help you prepare your web site for internet marketing.
Search Engine Optimization
The meaning of optimizing your web site has changed over the years. Originally is was all about the META TAG and your use of keywords. Now the tables have turned and the search engine place very little importance on your meta tags, instead requiring the content of your web site to be highly optimized for the keywords that pertain to your business.
TASK 1: Review your home page content. Update your headlines and content to use your top 3 keyword phrases.
Web Site Statistics
Most of my clients never look at their web site stats. It’s really a shame since you can learn a lot about how your marketing is working and where you’re traffic is coming from. Your web site statistics will tell you how many people come to your site, how long they stay, and what pages get the most traffic – plus a lot more information that is incredibly useful. Every hosting company provides web site statistic with your hosting package, you only need to log into your control panel to see what’s happening on your site.
TASK 2: Log in and take a look. Find out what your “bounce rate” is. This number will tell you if people coming to your site are finding what they want or moving on quickly. If it’s over 30% you need to review what keywords you’re using to make sure you’re getting the right visitors.
Social Media Marketing
Even if you’re not sure how to use social media to market your business, it’s time to dip your toe in and at least get accounts for Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter set up. Each web site has a different approach to networking and promoting your business and over time you’ll discover what works for you.
TASK 3: Go to www.facebook.com, www.linkedin.com, and www.twitter.com to set up accounts. Fill out your profiles and connect with people in your address book that are already signed up.
Ok – hope those tasks are not too over-whelming – if you’re already doing all of those things – FANTASTIC – share your experiences in the comment section and tell us how you use these tools to help market your business.
